I have always wondered why am I able to see random television program, often for less than ten seconds, and immediately recognize which network the show is airing on? To me the differences seem obvious and undeniable on ABC, colors are always darker and the definition is softer. NBC programs look more like traditional videotape brighter, sharper, and more aggressively modern. Everything on CBS, has a slightly grainy understated appearance, Fox looks like the middle ground between CBS and NBC. When the show Cavemen premiered last fall and I came across the first episode by accident it was not known what channel I was watching, but I did know this aesthetically Cavemen looked like an ABC show, it looked like Head of the Class which had looked like Barney Miller. I had a similar experience, when I first saw30 Rock a sitcom that visually resembles Friends, which visually resembled Silver Spoons. These relationships have nothing to do with content they refer only to the technical non-narrative aspects of how the shows are broadcast. For reasons I don’t understand I can identify the look of any major network instantaneously. So can a lot of other people we can do it without even trying.

Except that we can’t.

It’s a paradox. My ability to differentiate between TV networks is real. When I watch Lost I sometimes think this reminds me of Twin Peaks and Moonlighting. And I am right, but not for the reasons I believe. I think they look alike, but they don’t or at least not any more than all the other TV dramas shot on 35mm film. It’s an optical illusion created by my own mind and what’s weird about this particular illusion, is that it usually ends up proving accurate, I am tricking myself into seeing the truth even though that truth is invisible. I have watched so much television that I am now a genius.

And I suppose an idiot.

When initially pursuing this discrepancy the hypothesis was that these differences must be purely technological. I assumed the answer would be explained by different kinds of film stock or by different frequencies used during the transmission of satellite feeds. These possibilities were proved false. All the network producers buy their film stock from outside sources so there can’t be a brand of film that makes NBC look like NBC. It also can’t be a result of frequency because networks use different channels in different markets. As far, as I can tell there is no meaningful difference between how different networks shoot and broadcast.

This dead end made me question my whole premise, was I the only person who saw these differences? I started asking acquaintances if they could tell the difference between CBS and NBC. I noticed that whenever I asked a person who watched lots and lots of television. He always said “Of course." But whenever I asked someone who only watched TV casually he inevitably said something along the lines of I’m not sure. At first I thought those responses helped prove my point, I thought they suggested that these aesthetic differences were real but their subtlety was lost on anyone who wasn’t a sophisticated viewer. But now I suspect a different explanation in reality watching an inordinate amount of TV, causes a person to imagine concrete visual differences that are merely just the manifestation of abstract subconscious knowledge.

Comma Splices

-          Bj’s Vevlet Freeze, is mostly known for its ice cream and being a place to buy ice cream, but along with the many ice creams, they also offer hamburgers, sandwiches, French fries, and drinks, with a wide variety of food selections, this is an outstanding place to enjoy a delightful meal, with a delicious dessert after.

-          She is sleepy, she has to go to work.

-          The dog is barking, it is hungry.

-          Sally is running, her flats are not good shoes.

-          The Tell-Tale Heart is a great book, Sarah loves to read.

-          The teacher is crazy, she probably drinks too much coffee.

-          The love of shoes, she likes hoodies.

-          He is crazy, she is crazier.

-          Bj’s Velvet Freeze, is an excellent place to eat, everyone loves it.

-          The light burnt out, the stove is off.

 

Run on sentences

-          The squirrel ran up the log to chase a cat that was running up and down the log.

-          The cat chased the squirrel ran into the lake they did.

-          The squirrel could swim but the cat had troubles.

-          The Cat got out chasing the squirrel again up in a tree.

-          The squirrel got up the tree but the cat was following him.

-          They both fall out the tree and, fall to the floor with a thump.

-          Even though, they are both hurt, they run away again.

-          The cat happens to be a bit, faster than the squirrel so, it catches up quickly.

-          The squirrel trips and falls but, the cat comes to its rescue.

-          They then become friends and live, happily ever after.

Marthin Luther King Junior Speech

                                                Pathos

                Martin Luther King junior uses quiet of bit of Pathos in his “I have a Dream,” because it is full of emotional situations and all because of the time period in which this speech was made. The use of Pathos, he uses in his speech is outstanding, because though many people think, his speech is mainly for African American people, and it is actually for White and African American people of both genders. It is for both races because the way he says things and how he wants equality, because he doesn’t just want equality for African American people, he wants it for women as well, so therefore it is for all genders and races in a sense. I believe a huge emotional appeal to his audience is when he says “and the glory of the Lord shall be revealed and all flesh shall see it together,” this was a use from the Bible as well, which brings plenty of emotions itself already. He uses this Biblical approach in order to provide a sense of belief and faith in what he is saying, trying to provide that it is true, because him being from where he is from and being an African American, makes what he says not truthful, so this quote makes all things said in this speech through. Which I believe was one of his biggest approaches was to make it true and show how true it really is. This is engaging to his audience because this is for them and he is using lots of metaphor which engages his audience into the speech more because he is being persuasive.

 

                                                                Logos

                In Martin Luther King Junior, “I have a Dream Speech,” there is some logos in it because his speech is very logical. He uses these analogies to himself, the people, and different points in history, which makes a logical appeal. An example of Logos, which is also an analogy, is “America has given the Negro people a bad check, a check which has come back marked insufficient funds,” this is a logical form of reasoning to his cause, which makes his speech even stronger. This is a reason he uses because everyone understands money and money is a big part in the American life now and back then as well, so therefore his audience can relate to his speech in that way. Also, this is reliable because everyone will reserve a bad check in at least some point in their life, so that is logical for Dr. King.

 

                                                                Ethos

                The “I have a Dream Speech,” by Martin Luther King Junior has some Ethos in it as well. Well actually more or less credibility because ethos is credibility. An example of Ethos is when he announces Abraham Lincoln, when he says “five score years ago, a great American, in whose symbolic shadow we stand today, signed the emancipation proclamation.” This is credible because it is something Lincoln did, which he is a reliable source, therefore it must be credible. Also, this brought some authority to his speech, because he shows how much he knows and provides the people wrong. The whole speech in a sense is credible though, since Dr. King said it, and he is a reliable source, it is credible, which is ethos.

The three logical appeals

Logos/ ethos
1. The first sentence when he says " Twenty- five years ago, only a handful of American companies directed their marketing at children-- Disney, McDonalds, candy makers, toy makers, manufactures of breakfast cereals.'
   - This statement makes a great argument because the statement is true, that we have more ads targeting kids, than we have ever had, and some of those ads shouldn't even be targeting kids, so it is bad. Also, it is a good argument because it is true and reliable.

Pathos/ Logos
2. " the decade of the child consumer"
    - This line makes an effective argument because during the 1980s, it was a decade for child consumers because that is when more and more ads began targeting to children rather than adults. It makes an effective emotional appeal because it makes you feel bad because children are the target for everything, and honestly this shouldn't be the case for anything.

Pathos
3. The discontinued Joe Camel campaign, which used a hip cartoon character to sell cigarettes, showed how easily children can be influenced by the right corporate character.
   - This is an effective argument because as sad, as it might be, it is so true because if there is a cartoon in an ad, a child will be more likely to watch it and want what that cartoon has.

Ethos
4. Children's clubs have for years been considered an effective means of targeting ads and collecting demographics information; the clubs appeal to a child's fundamental need for status and belonging.
   - This is an effective argument because is it very true, that targeting to kids, appeals to them and then they want it, which is an effective way how producers get their money.

Review Questions

                                                            A Barbie Doll made by Mattel
        A positive for the company, when using children for broadcast media, is that more people will buy it because their child wants it and that it connects children to an actual toy, that isn't a Ipad, because now of days, more children would rather play on an ipad than an actual toy such as a Barbie. Some negatives to broadcast media is that children are watching too much tv and spoiling their brains, and that they are sending some not true messages to children, such as how awesome the toy is and how they must have it. The Stories being sold here is that it is not like any other Barbie doll, which isn't true because it basically is and that the kids needs in, when in all reality, the child doesn't need it because I bet they already have plenty of barbies. The Values being sold here, is how value that doll is and how other children would be jealous, and the actual value of a dollar because some barbies aren't so cheap. I can conclude that broadcast media is focusing too much on children because most ads are to children since they are more likely to want something than an adult, and they know if a kid likes it, than their parents will buy it for them, and they make money from it, which is their biggest goal.

Number two
     I believe the role corporations should play in our lives today is to advertise about certain topics in such ways as print media, broadcast media, and pop- up media, but I do believe some of the ads should be limited because we see them so much, and many affect our children. The role corporations play right now is advertising, what they want, whenever they want, and however they want without any consent from most outside sources. I believe age doesn't always matter with the topic on advertising because many things, can have more than one age group, such as a jump rope for intense. The media has a young children around the age of eight jump roping on a commercial telling the viewers to buy it because it is so awesome, now this ad is made towards young children. But in reality a jump rope can be used from a person the age of lets say three to sixty, so therefore their ad is being bias and irreverent because they only use on target audience. I mean for a toy, a young child is perfect but for a kitchen appliance an adult is better because of what that product is used for. The age matters a lot to the consumers because they want to know if it is actually good for them, but some ads lie, when they don't actually use someone of the right age for that ad. So, in conclusion age can matter in corporations ads, but it doesn't always have to. ( for this exercise, I wasn't too sure on exactly what to do for this, so I just tried my best and I hope it is good enough, I didn't really understand it.)

I will be writing on Commercial number one.
     
       This commercial appeals to your emotions because it gives you a very sad feeling, but then you get this feel of happiness as well. You get this sad feeling first, when the boy is spray painting because it seems like he is having family issues and the only way for him to feel better is to spray paint a wall. Also, you feel a sense of hurt because the boy is all alone and he looks pretty sad, and like something is really wrong with him, and he needs someone to care about him, at first when I was watching I thought he had a horrible home life or was a street kid. You also feel sad, when you see his little sister in the bed with a oxygen tube on and she just looks so unhappy basically miserable. Once the brother opens the curtains and the sick little girl see the flower and words be brave, she gets a smile on her face and she looks happy and so does the brother, so you feel happiness because he did it for his little sister and even at that point the mother was proud.
     This commercial shows Logos, because it has some logic in it, or at least I see some logical explanation to this. I believe when he first ran out and started spray painting was when logos first appeared because he had to have a logical reason for doing what he had done, and come to find out, he did. Also, I see logos when the brother opens the curtains, and the sick little sister sees the colorful flowers and words be brave. This is logical because a sick child must be brave in order to heal and get better, so the words there are very true. He shows her encouragement and that she can do it and be a fighter. It can also be proven that someone sick must be brave because of all the work being done to them, so it is actually a real reason.
   This commercial does not really show ethos very much because it is the best credible source. But I do believe this video is credible because it shows an older brother will do anything to bring a smile on his little sister face, which can be credible I believe. Also, this video shows that the brother believes in his sister in that she is brave and can get better, which is credible. This is believable because it is true that one must be brave.

Pathos, ethos, and logos summary

                                                                                Ethos

                Ethos is the appeal to credibility. To use ethos in writing one must have good judgment, be knowledgeable, and show that you know about this issue you are writing about. In order to have good judgment, you have to identify a problem that is actually worth addressing, this then shows how credible something is. When identifying a problem, you should also get the reader’s attention with this problem, so they too can agree with you on that problem. You should keep your reader’s interest while conveying your judgment in a perfect way. To show the reader how knowledgeable you are, you need to be thoughtful about the subject and even provide reference for your subject, if available. To show you understand your issue, you must help your reader to understand the issue at hand, and provide ways for the reader to understand that issue, in the same way you do. Also, it is nice to use more than one view point for you issue because you are showing both sides and it conveys the meaning better for the reader.

 

                                                                                Pathos    

                Pathos is appealing to the reader’s emotions. When using pathos, you should make your reader feel something like anger, sadness, happiness, passion, and many other emotions. It basically is making your reader get the feels for the topic, and makes them feel the same way about the topic, that you feel. Usually this is indirect way of making their emotions come out. Using examples or illustrating your topic, can usually show Pathos in the best ways. When using pathos, you should show your readers value, use examples or illustrations, and consider you tone to your audience. Make sure to show your reader he or she is valuable and that their opinion matters too. Giving examples is pretty straight forward, I mean just give a life example, like something that happened to you and relates to the topic. Your tone is set by the language you use in your writing, such as strong meaningful words. Tone is very important when appealing to Pathos because it has a lot to do with emotions.

 

                                                                                Logos

                Logos is appealing to logic. You should use reason and evidence to fit the argument or situation you are conveying. When using logos you should also, state your argument, use credible evidence, and show your conclusion to that certain topic. When saying your argument give both sides and persuade your reader to feel the same way about the topic, which you do. Make sure to lead your reader into you argument and don’t lose them at any point in time. Use the right type of words to get to your conclusion, so that you don’t confuse your reader in any way.

Summary of chapter five

BLOG POST 1: Write a summary of Chapter 5 in Inquiry. (You don't need to summarize the exercises and sample essays; just the information about thesis statements.)

       In chapter five of our Inquiry text, it talks a lot about how to make a amazing thesis statement, which can be truly helpful, if you don't already know how to write a proper thesis statement. First, it must have a clear assertion about your topic, must reflect awareness of the topic, shows the writers view on that topic, and should be at the beginning of an essay. Also, the argument the writer is trying to state, should be clear to the reader, they don't have to guess it. There are three ways to make a thesis statement and these ways are misinterpretations model, the gap model, and Modification model. In the thesis, you should have a clear context about the topic and the issue must be established in the thesis, no later. You should write the other side to that topic, if you can, so that the reader knows there are two sides to that certain topic. Explain what you see is the problem with your topic or what are you trying to convey. Lastly, you should if possible have three main points in your thesis statement.

PART 2: WRITING AN ARGUABLE AND NARROW THESIS STATEMENT AROUND AN ISSUE THAT EXCITES YOU

-          Even though, many people believe math isn’t an important concept to learn for the real world, I believe math is an important subject to learn because it helps with measuring, so you can cook and measure the exact amount, also for engineers and construction workers, and lastly, so you can help your kids or friends with a math type of problem if they need it.

-          Everyone has their own favorite food, that they enjoy having wherever they get the chance, I for one, have a few different favorite foods, but my all-time favorite is homemade ground beef casserole, this is my favorite food because it is delicious, homemade, and it has this flavoring that is to die for.

-          Although, many people like sweat shirts over hoodies, I would have to disagree with those people because I believe hoodies are the better option because they zip up or down, are warmer in my opinion, and they come in more colors and designs than sweat shirts.

-          Most people have that one favorite restaurant where they just wish they could eat there all the time, but usually people don’t, well my favorite restaurant is Red Robins because you can get endless root beer floats there, which are amazing if I might add, they have the worlds bet burgers and spaghetti, and their fruit salad is beyond good, it taste so good and they have a special flavoring making it better.

-          The topic about gun control is a very debatable in today’s time, you have the people who want stronger gun laws, but you also, have the people who don’t, I for one am in vote of having stronger gun law because I believe it is safer for the people and children, less violence mostly, and less children can get a hold of a gun and hurt themselves or someone else.

Thesis Statements

1-      Education is a great place for a person to get a better education and learn new things to help them later on in life. 1- A distance education is a great way for you to do what you want and learn at your own pace because you won’t be in the regular classroom setting, it is also good for the shy, less talkative people, who don’t like being in groups.

2-      Communication is the perfect way for someone to get to know someone in a better way and learn things about them such as what they like or how many siblings they have. 2- Hearing a difference in people’s voice, is a wonderful thing to hear because you can then tell if someone is mad, upset, or excited about something.

3-      Work, is basically the only way you are going to make money, so you have to work in order to get what you want. 3- Don’t you love, when your job, gives you paid vacation time, it like the best feeling in the world, you get paid while having fun.

4-      One of the worst things someone can be is dishonest because then they lie and aren’t loyal, meaning they aren’t real friends. 4- You shouldn’t cheat in sports because it is wrong, dishonest, and not fair to the other players.

5-      A community is a place where people live, but you all live close to whether, you can talk and become friends. 5- Volunteerism, is such a great thing because it makes you feel good, you help people, and it’s nice to volunteer your time.

6-      Watching TV isn’t the worst possible thing for kids, but it by far not the best thing either because it rotes children’s brains, teaches some bad things, and they see things, a child should never do. 6- There are so many reality TV shows on TV today, it’s just crazy.

7-      Relationships are truly amazing, it’s a great feeling to be in a relationship with someone, but in order to have a good relationship, and you must be loyal, trustworthy, and kind. 7- There is no such kind of relationship, like a relationship a father and son share.

8-      Not used very much today is newspapers, an example of a print media. 8- I haven’t yet seen an actual college newspaper, but I am sure they exist and are pretty awesome.

9-      Family is truly amazing, one of the greatest things in the world, is your family because they stand by you and love you for who you are. 9- Many people don’t actually eat together in a home anymore, but I believe eating as a family is very valuable and should be done more often.

10-   Criminal justice is a very popular topic for college students to study today. 10- The treatment of inmates is by far too good because it is better than actual people who haven’t committed crime are treated.

 

EXERCISE 4

Write two arguable thesis statements, each with at least three supporting arguments. They do not need to be complicated. The important thing is that your thesis and supporting arguments logically align. 

 

 

1-      I believe the government needs to fix more Colorado roads because some roads are too dangerous to drive on, too many pot holes, and some roads are so bumpy, you move around so much and can get hurt.

2-      I believe every person should be treated equal no matter what their gender, sexuality or class they are in because it is fair, its follows the rules, and more people would be happy.

 

 

EXERCISE 5

Listed with the two thesis statements below are possible supporting arguments. Within each group of possible supporting arguments, one (1) does not align logically with the thesis. Circle each supporting argument that does not align.   

1. The media should be as hard on non-players as they are on players when it comes to cheating in baseball. 

(• Gamblers do a lot of damage to the game.) • Fans steal signals from opposing teams and relay them to players and coaches. • Non-starting players also steal signals.  • Groundskeepers have been known to “fix” fields for a home-team advantage. 

 

 

 

2. Kansas is a great place to live. 

(• The state has great roads and traffic is seldom congested). • Kansas City offers many fun attractions, especially east of State Line Road. • It has many community colleges that enhance local economies. • Kansans have a rich history of looking out for one another.
